A call for solidarity from The Italian Federation of Knowledge Workers FLC CGIL
General Strike FLC CGIL
Rome, December 11th
All the teaching, research, technical and administrative staff working in the field of knowledge, and the whole system of education and research is undergoing sweeping reforms carried out by the Government, through which the rights of negotiation and democracy are reduced, the public system of schools, universities and research institutions is to be dismantled, as well as the funding and jobs are cut. Thus, the universal right of citizens to education, guaranteed by our Constitution, is denied.
Facing such a serious and dangerous attack, FLC Cgil has took the decision to call a general strike of all the sectors of knowledge on December 11th
These are, in short, the main reasons for the strike:
• Against the cut of funding and staff due to the financial law of the Berlusconi Government
• Against the inadequate appropriation for the renewal of the national contracts (12 euros for next year), to increase the purchasing power of salaries
• Against the projects aiming at dismantling the public system of education and research
• Against the lack of a long-term plan to engage the hundreds of thousands of non-permanent workers
• Against the law concerning the public services, aiming at reducing salaries, rights, democracy, and workers' protections
• For a plan of investments centred on the knowledge sectors, intended to help the country overcome the crisis
• To support employment through the enlargement of social protections
• To support the workers'incomes through a reduction of their taxation
• For a safe school
General strike of public and private schools, universities, research institutes, fine arts and music academies. This is the answer FLC Cgil gives to the Government, to the Minister of Education Gelmini, the Minister of Public Administration Brunetta, the Minister of Economic Affairs Tremonti, the Minister of Labour Sacconi who, with their authoritative policies, are trying to lay the weight of the crisis on the less protected citizens, while making the country poorer and weaker.
